On this day (10th December) 1936, Edward VIII gave up his throne. After the state refused to allow him to marry the twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson, he chose love over duty and became the first King to do so since the Roman Catholic James II fled the realm in 1688.
The abdication nearly brought the monarchy to its knees as his younger and more retiring brother Bertie stepped in to take on the burden of Kingship. You may have seen Edward and Wallis depicted in various dramas including The Crown but this documentary, packed with rarely seen footage of the pair, gives you the opportunity to discover the truth behind the myth.
